About Me
I was born in Cuba, where a strong desire for justice marked me and remained throughout my life. The censorship and restrictions I experienced growing up left their mark on my spirit and made me have an irresistible thirst for justice. This passion has guided me on my journey to become a lawyer, which has been anything but easy. As I stand on the threshold of a new chapter in my life, I look back on my journey with pride and a sense of accomplishment. I have been prepared for the journey that lies ahead by the experiences that I have had, the challenges that I have faced, and the successes that I have achieved. I carry the lessons of my past, the aspirations for my future, and the tireless pursuit of justice and equality with me as I continue the path to becoming an attorney.
I have developed cultural competence through years of improving my English skills, adapting to American norms, and working across international borders. As a first-generation college student, I had to self-motivate to succeed academically while adapting to a foreign language and system, as I developed communication skills and cultural fluency through college courses, political science research, and paralegal work. These skills allowed me to thrive in legal internships serving immigrant clients. As a future lawyer, my cultural competence allows me to relate to different clients and colleagues, as well as different legal systems. In addition, my practical knowledge of the law provides a critical context for the application of legal theory. Through paralegal work and assisting attorneys with immigration cases, I developed practical legal skills and witnessed firsthand how the law impacts people, strengthening my passion for social justice. My goal now is to complement my UCF undergraduate degree with rigorous academic study of the law at the graduate level. Combining my cultural competency and legal knowledge is an absolute determination to create positive change. Despite facing challenges, such as improving my English language skills on my own and working full-time while completing a degree, my motivation has only grown stronger. I am driven to become a bilingual lawyer who promotes justice across cultures.
Through my diverse experiences, I have gained a unique set of skills that will serve as powerful tools as I continue to pursue social justice through the legal system. My journey is now taking me to law school, a critical step in which I can continue to develop my cultural sensitivity, deepen my understanding of the law, and fuel my relentless determination to affect change. As a future lawyer, I strive to make a meaningful contribution to the legal community, and I pledge to uphold these values
